Travel-Related Deep Vein Thrombosis

Long travels by plane, train, bus, car, etc., are thought to cause a slightly increased risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) or blood clot in the leg. Because you are sitting immobile for prolonged periods, blood flows more slowly and tends to collect in the legs. And when blood flows slowly it has an increased tendency to clot.

To reduce the risk of travel-related DVT, exercise your calf and foot muscles regularly. For every 30 minutes or so of sitting time, bend and straighten your legs, feet and toes. If you are able, get up and walk. It is important to drink plenty of water and avoid drinking too much alcohol to prevent dehydration. Stay away from sleeping pills (and too much alcohol) to prevent immobility. Wearing compression stockings or socks can help prevent blood pooling in the calf.

DVT is a serious condition that requires immediate treatment as it can be life threatening.
