Shin Splints
Shin splints refer to exercise induced leg pain commonly seen in runners, dancers, gymnasts, and other athletes who are engaged in sports that require sudden stops and starts such as basketball, soccer or tennis. The pain along tibia increases during activity and may initially be relieved with rest. The pain becomes more severe as the condition worsens and may become continuous.
Common causes include irritated and swollen muscles from overuse, a stress fracture, or having flat feet.
Rest, ice and gentle stretches often help. Other forms of treatment involve taping, arch support orthotics, adjusting the foot, ankle, pelvis and back, as well as electrotherapy and massage therapy.
To prevent shin splints, always wear shoes with good support and padding. It is highly recommended to warm up before working out and stopping the activity as soon as pain is felt. Ideally, it is best to avoid running or playing on hard surfaces.
