Pain-Free Travel Tips

Thanksgiving holiday is upon us and it is known to be one of the busiest travel time of the year!. This year, AAA estimated that about 46 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home making this year the highest volume since 2007. And with long travel (plane, train, automobiles) come body aches and pains. Make your travel more comfortable and more enjoyable by following these simple tips.

• Use suitcase with wheels when possible – pack light, use a few smaller bags instead of stuffing everything in one large suitcase
• Break the action into smaller parts when lifting – for instance, when lifting a bag into an overhead bin you should place it on the seat first. From there, lift and place in the bin.
• Bend at the knees when lifting – use your leg muscles rather than your back muscles to lift. Pivot with your feet when lifting and avoid twisting the low back
• Carry heavy items as close to your body as possible
• Make yourself comfortable and bring your own support – lumbar support pillow, neck pillow (or simply roll up your jacket/sweater/blanket)
• Don’t forget to support your feet – rest both feet on a firm surface if you are unable to rest them on the floor
• Good sitting posture – place your back against the backrest with the headrest supporting your head. Avoid slouching
• Get up and stretch to prevent muscle aches and stiffness. Movement also helps prevent blood clots from forming in the leg
• For minor aches and discomfort, apply a cold pack or alternate with ice and heat
• See your chiropractor for your spine health maintenance as soon as you get a chance

Have a safe, pain-free travel!
