Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common overuse injuries among runners and bikers. The band that runs down the outside of the thigh form the hip to the shin becomes tight and inflamed. The most notable symptom is swelling and pain on the outside of the knee.

ITB Syndrome is a result of wearing worn-out shoes, running downhill, running on concrete surfaces, running too many miles, or any activities that require repetitive knee flexion and extension.

ITBS can become chronic if not treated. Prognosis is excellent with appropriate conservative care. Conservative care includes rest, ice and heat therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, and proper shoes or orthotics. Adjusting the pelvis and lumbar spine, as well as the hip, knee and ankle, combined with ultrasound or electrical stimulation have been shown to be effective in treating ITBS.
