BASIC NUTRITION INFO YOU NEED TO KNOW:
What are macros and micros and why are they important?
Macros or macronutrients are nutrients that supply energy as kilocalories and are found in all food including junk food and alcohol. These are your carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Macros are vital for every function we perform in the body because they provide us with fuel for the body. Without that energy, our bodies would not be able to grow, repair and develop new tissues, conduct nerve impulses and regulate life process.
Along with regular exercise, the calories recommended for optimal health based on research are as follows:
*Calories from carbs: 55-65%
*Calories from fat: less than 20%
*Calories from protein: no more than 20%
*Specific needs will vary based on activity level, overall physical fitness, presence of disease, age, gender, etc.
Micros, also known as micronutrients, are your vitamins (A, D, E, K, B’s, C) and minerals (zinc, magnesium, potassium, calcium) that supply no energy but provide all the cofactors and coenzymes essential for life. Trace elements like iron, fluoride, and iodine and phytochemicals such as isoflavones are also considered micros. These are just as important for the normal functioning of the body.
