Heel Spur

Heel spur, a bony protrusion seen on an x-ray, is a calcium deposit on the bottom of the calcaneus or the heel bone.

Heel spurs become painful when the plantar fascia or the flat band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes become inflamed (aka plantar fasciitis).

Heel spurs are often caused by strains on foot muscles and ligaments, degeneration of the plantar fascia, and repetitive tearing of the tissue that covers the heel bone. They are common among athletes whose activities involve running and jumping. Risk factors include walking gait abnormalities and poorly fitted or worn shoes that lack arch support.

Treatments for heel spurs and plantar fasciitis focus on decreasing the inflammation and avoiding constant stress to the heel. Conservative treatments include rest, ice, stretching, orthotics, and chiropractic adjustment.
